Busta Rhymes hat im Interview bei Sway Calloways Radio-Show Sways Universe erklärt, dass er und Cash Money Records nach drei Jahren der Zusammenarbeit (aber ohne Albumrelease) mittlerweile getrennte Wege gehen.
Auslöser der Trennung vom erfolgreichen Label aus New Orleans seien Differenzen im kreativen Prozess in Bezug auf sein kommenden Albums „Extinction Level Event 2“ gewesen.
So gab Busta Rhymes folgendes zu Protokoll:
For me, with this particular project and all of the sacrifice that went into it; recording the album for five years, I lost Chris Lighty making this album, I lost my father making this album. The shit I was putting into this album, I’m not compromising my vision for it.
So if I feel like if, in the slightest way, we ain’t facilitating everything necessary for the vision to be seen through and executed in the way that I’ve been envisioning this shit for the last five years, let me live and die in my own own inequity.
Dennoch betonte er, dass er und der Cash Money Records Labelchef und Rapmogul Birdman einvernehmlich auseinander gegangen wären.
I just had a conversation with Bird like, ‘Listen, bro. I’m grateful and everything is love with us, but I just gotta see this through the way that I want to see this through.
Was nun mit dem Projekt „Extinction Level Event 2“ geschehen wird ist unklar, denn Busta Rhymes ließ nicht verlauten, ob ein neuer Plattendeal in Aussicht steht oder ob er das Projekt independent releasen wird. „Calm Down“, die gemeinsame Single mit Eminem, ist mittlerweile aber schon erschienen.
