Lauryn Hill ist weiterhin wegen massiver Steuerhinterziehung im Blickfeld der Justiz. Nachdem die Frontfrau der Fugees bereits im letzten Jahr öffentlich zugegeben hatte das sie keine Steuern mehr zahlen würde, muss sie nun um ihre Freiheit bangen. In der letzten Woche sollte sie eigentlich bereits verurteilt werden, doch eine dramatische Wendung, die Lauryn Hill aus ihren Schulden helfen und vor einer Gefängnisstrafe bewahren könnte, veranlasste, dass das Gericht ihre Verurteilung um zwei Wochen verschob.
Zuvor hatte Hill sich schuldig dazu bekannt, zwischen 2005 und 2007 keine Steuern gezahlt zu haben. Ihre Einnahmen sollen sich in den zwei Jahren auf ungefähr 1.8 Millionen Dollar belaufen haben, für die sie jedoch nicht die gesetzlichen Abgaben einräumte. Lauryn Hill schuldet dem Staat New Jersey dadurch angeblich ganze 968.000 Dollar. Sollte Hill diese Schulden nicht begleichen können, drohen mehrere Jahre hinter schwedischen Gardinen.
Bei ihrer geplanten Verurteilung vor einer Woche, gab Lauryn Hills Anwalt jedoch bekannt, dass sie einen lukrativen Vertrag mit Sony Music unterschrieben haben soll, der für die Bezahlung der vielen Schulden, aber wohl auch für neue Musik von der achtfachen Grammy-Preisträgerin herhalten soll. Nach Angaben des Boulevard-Magazins TMZ soll es sich dabei um einen Vertrag in Höhe von einer Million Dollar handeln, was allerdings bereits von Lauryn Hill dementiert wurde. Die Einnahmen, die Hill durch den neuen Vertrag erwirtschaften kann, sollen dann zur Abzahlung der ausstehenden Schulden dienen.
Durch diese Intervention wurde Lauryn Hill also bisher noch nicht verurteilt. Die zuständige Richterin verschob die Verurteilung um zwei Wochen, doch kritisierte Hills verantwortungsloses Verhalten: “This is not someone who stands before the court penniless. This is a criminal matter. Actions speak louder than words, and there has been no effort here to pay these taxes.â€
In einem Brief an die 〓ffentlichkeit spricht, die sonst so in sich gekehrte, Lauryn Hill über ihren neuen Vertrag, neue Musik, ihren Kampf um künstlerische Freiheit und finanzielle Unabhängigkeit. Ihre Anwälte hoffen nun darauf, dass sie durch den neuen Vertrag mit Sony Worldwide Entertainment ihre Schulden bis zur nächsten Anhörung bezahlen kann und dass die sechsfache Mutter dadurch lediglich eine Bewährungsstrafe absolvieren muss.

It has been reported that I signed a new record deal, and that I did this to pay taxes. Yes, I have recently entered into an agreement with Sony Worldwide Entertainment, to launch a new label, on which my new music will be released. And yes, I am working on new music.
I’ve remained silent, after an extensive healing process. This has been a 10+ year battle, for a long time played out behind closed doors, but now in front of the public eye. This is an old conflict between art and commerce… free minds, and minds that are perhaps overly tethered to structure. This is about inequity, and the resulting disenfranchisement caused by it. I’ve been fighting for existential and economic freedom, which means the freedom to create and live without someone threatening, controlling, and/or manipulating the art and the artist, by tying the purse strings.
It took years for me to get out of the ‘parasitic‘ dynamic of my youth, and into a deal that better reflects my true contribution as an artist, and (purportedly) gives me the control necessary to create a paradigm suitable for my needs. I have been working towards this for a long time, not just because of my current legal situation, but because I am an artist, I love to create, and I need the proper platform to do so.
The nature of my new business venture, as well as the dollar amount reported, was inaccurate, only a portion of the overall deal. Keep in mind, my past recordings have sold over 50,000,000 units worldwide, earning the label a tremendous amount of money (a fraction of which actually came to me).
Only a completely complicated set of traps, manipulations, and inequitable business arrangements could put someone who has accomplished the things that I have, financially in need of anything. I am one artist who finds value in openly discussing the dynamics within this industry that force artists to compromise or distort themselves and what they do, rather than allowing them to make the music that people need. There are volumes that could (and will) be said.

Update: Na das war knapp! Genau einen Tag bevor Lauryn Hill verurteilt werden sollte, schaffte sie es ihre 968.000 Dollar an Schulden, zu bezahlen. Zwar war es ihr Plan bzw. der Plan ihres Anwalts, die Schulden durch die Unterzeichnung eines Plattenvertrages los zu werden, doch letztendlich beglich Lauryn Hill die Schulden, in dem sie Hypotheken auf zwei ihrer Grundstücke aufnahm. Somit sind ihre Schulden nun bezahlt und Lauryn Hill kann weiterhin ihre Freiheit genießen.
In einer Nachricht von ihrem Anwalt an die Staatsanwaltschaft hieß es außerdem:
„Ms Hill has not only now fully paid prior to sentencing her taxes, which are part of her criminal restitution, but she has additionally fully paid her federal and state personal taxes for the entire period under examination through 2009.“
Am Wochenende überraschte uns die Sängerin nach langer Zeit ohne Veröffentlichungen mit einem neuen Song namens „Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix)„.
UPDATE 2:
Nun muss Ms. Lauryn Hill doch noch vorübergehend in das Gefängnis umziehen. Laut der Washington Post wurde die ehemalige Fugees Fronfrau vom Richter zu einer dreimonatigen Freiheitsstrafe verurteilt, obwohl sie zwischenzeitlich Hypotheken auf ihre Grundstücke aufgenommen hatte. Im Juli soll sie dann ihre Haftstrafe antreten.
